Net migration to Britain has fallen by more than a third, official figures show, putting the Tories on course to deliver on a election pledge PDF Print E-mail

A report from the Office of National Statistics shows that the number of immigrants arriving in the country dropped “significantly” in the most recent 12 month period.

The result was that net migration to Britain - the difference between those arriving and leaving - fell from 242,000 in the previous year to 153,000 migrants in the year to September 2012,.

It means that Prime Minister David Cameron is now on course to hit a Conservative pledge to cut net migration to tens of thousands by 2015.

The decline was driven by a drop in the number of immigrants coming to Britain, which fell from 581,000 to 500,000, while the number of migrants leaving the country rose from 339,000 to 347,000.

Immigration Minister Mark Harper hailed the figure, pointing out that the figures mean net migration has now fallen by a third since June 2010.

News from the UK Border Agency PDF Print E-mail

Seventeen immigration offenders have been caught following our Immigration Enforcement operations in Oban.

On 9 May, our officers visited a number of licensed premises in Oban, working with officers from Police Scotland.

Checks on the immigration status of staff revealed 17 men had no right to work in the UK. They were all arrested with 16 being detained pending their removal from the country while one has been released awaiting further enquiries into his immigration status.

The premises visited during the operation were:

  • Taj Mahal, on George Street, where 5 Bangladeshi men aged between 22 and 36 were arrested.
  • Kebabish on George Street, where a 32-year-old Pakistani man was arrested.
  • Crystal Palace, on George Street, where 2 Chinese men aged 43 and 45 were arrested and detained while a 3rd Chinese man was arrested but later released pending further enquiries.
  • Light of India, on Stevenson Street, where 5 Bangladeshi men aged between 26 and 64 were arrested.
  • Coriander, on Soroba Road, where 3 Bangladeshi men aged between 31 and 39 were arrested.

The businesses will be served with fines for employing the illegal workers. If the employers are unable to provide evidence that legally required pre- employment checks were carried out on the workers before giving them a job, a fine of up to £10,000 for each illegal employee will be given.

Adam Scarcliffe, assistant director, Scotland Immigration Enforcement team, Home Office said:

'The message for anyone living and working in Scotland illegally is clear - it doesn't matter where you are, we will track you down and remove you from the country.

'We're undertaking operations like this throughout the country on a regular basis, and more are planned. We're happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be made on staff, but those who break the law should know that they will face heavy fines.

'I would urge members of the public with detailed information about suspected immigration abuse to get in touch.'

Employers unsure of the steps they need to take to avoid employing illegal workers can visit our page on preventing illegal working or call the Employers Helpline on 0300 123 4699.

London Metropolitan University granted new licence for a probationary period PDF Print E-mail
International students will be permitted to enter the UK to study at London Metropolitan University from today.

This decision follows the removal of the university's sponsor licence in August 2012.

A series of inspections carried out by the Home Office in the last 6 months have demonstrated that the university has made the necessary improvements to its systems and administration. The university now meets the requirements needed to sponsor international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

In line with Home Office policy, the university will now be subject to a probationary period in order to build a track record of compliance with the new students they enrol.

During this period there will also be a limit on the number of international students the university can enrol.

Home Office inspection teams looked at areas of concern that led to the revocation of the university's licence last year, and have worked with university staff to ensure they have appropriate processes for recruiting and monitoring their international students.

Following revocation the Home Office was in contact with affected students directly, and provided regular news and guidance on its homepage. Advice and guidance on applying for a student visa can be found on our London Metropolitan University guidance page.
