One of the most popular schemes is the points-based skilled immigration category, the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) which was introduced in January 2002 to attract ' high human capital individuals, who have the qualifications and skills required by UK businesses to compete in the global marketplace' (Para 2.18, 2002 White Paper). In this scheme points are allocated for educational qualifications, age, salary and UK Experience / UK Study. Unlike the sponsored work permit you do not require an employer in order to obtain the visa. This visa now manifests itself as Tier 1 (general) under the new UK Points Based System. International Work Permits can also assist in extension of HSMP under the new scheme (always on a "no visa no fee" basis) aswell as extensions under the Pre-November 2006 rules.
Why HSMP (now known as Tier 1 (general)) ?
NOTE: From 6th April the points system changes and the UKBA have bought back the Bachelors degree as a minimum requirement. Please check the UKBA site for further details:-
